Roullete is a game of chance, popular in casinos and gambling dens around the world. It is based on spinning a wheel with numbered slots, and bets are made on the number or grouping of numbers where the ball will come to rest when the wheel comes to a stop. The player places his or her chips on a betting mat, the precise location of each chip showing the type of bet being placed. Bets on six or less numbers are called Inside bets, while those on twelve or more are known as Outside bets. Each type of bet has a different house edge and payout, so it is important to understand the odds before placing your chips.
The game consists of a table, in which bets can be placed, and a revolving dishlike device (roulettewheel) into which a small ball is spun and eventually comes to rest in one of the compartments containing numbers on the wheel. Thirty-six of the compartments, painted alternately red and black, are numbered nonconsecutively from 1 to 36. A green compartment carries the number 0 on European roulette wheels, while on American roulette wheels two additional green compartments carry the numbers 0 and 00.
After all bets have been placed, the dealer spins the wheel in one direction while rolling a small ball in the opposite direction around the rim of the roulettewheel. The ball bounces around the wheel, and when it comes to a stop in one of the slots, the player who has bet on that number or the colour (red or black) or whether the number is odd or even wins. The winnings are paid out in the form of coloured chips that the dealer gives to the player.
