The telltale signs of summer in Hong Kong are all around you – overcrowded beaches, dripping air-conditioners and a stifling humidity that makes every movement feel like a marathon. When you just can’t take it any more, head to one of the city’s many hotel pools for a bit of (semi) privacy, top-notch facilities and the option of a cocktail or two.
Public swimming pools are managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and they’re cheap as chips – adult admission is just HK$17 during the week, HK$19 at weekends and public holidays and kids under three go free. Many also have kiddie pools and water slides to make your swim more fun.
In recent years the LCSD has replaced several older facilities, including a massive new HK$800 million complex in Victoria Park which hosts a 50 by 25 metre main pool, a multi-purpose pool and the largest swimming pool spectator stand in Hong Kong, seating 2,500 people. It’s a popular spot for competitions, too, with several Asian games and world championship events taking place there since opening in 2011.
Whether you want to get fit or just have some fun, swimming is the ideal exercise. It not only burns calories, but it reduces stress, anxiety and depression. Research has shown that just a few swims a week can improve your mood and boost energy levels, too. So if you’re in need of some serious cooling down, here are our picks for the best hk pools to visit this summer.
Located out in Ma On Shan, this spacious pool looks out towards Tolo Harbour. It’s a popular spot for families with young children, with the four waterslides boasting some of Hong Kong’s highest and longest slides. In addition to the water slides, the facility has indoor and outdoor leisure pools, a round stepping pool, and a toddlers’ pool. It’s also home to whimsical water installations such as mushroom and tree-shaped fountains, and a couple of the pools have been designed with the youngest swimmers in mind.
If you’re looking for a luxurious pool experience, look no further than Asaya at Rosewood. This stunning rooftop pool offers a scenic view of the city skyline at day and night, plus a full menu of drinks and snacks. Members will receive 12 complimentary day passes on their first registration and can enjoy the pool, fitness centre and spa facilities and a selection of wellness classes, all while earning bonus Asia Miles!
